Government Degree College Chhatri was established on June 9th, 2022 to fulfil the long-standing demand of the local populace of the Magru and Mangadh area. However, the college building is yet to be constructed at Shingal, which is around 2 km from the main market of Chhatri. Shingal is a famous place for red clay, which was traditionally used for pottery by the local inhabitants. This place is blessed with very fertile land and is full of apple orchards. It is believed to be the place of origin of Lord Shiva, locally known as Magru Mahadev, because the first Shiv Linga was found at this place and was later established at the central part of the temple. Chhatri is situated in the lap of the holy place ‘Hilmi’, which is also the confluence of two local rivulets, Baryogi and Bilagad. The word Chhatri is synonymous with the English word umbrella, as the geography of this place resembles an umbrella. An old belief says that the name Chhatri is derived from a holy deodar (Himalayan cedar) tree located at this place, the shape of which appears like an umbrella due to its dwarf size.
