Government Degree College Chhatri was established on June 9th, 2022 to fulfil the long-standing demand of the local populace of the Magru & Mangadh area. However, the college building is yet to be constructed at place Shingal which is around 2 KM away from the main market of Chhatri. Shingal is a famous place for red clay which was traditionally used for pottery by the local inhabitants. This place is bestowed with the most fertile land and loaded with apple orchards. It is assumed to be the origin place of Lord Shiva locally known as Magru Mahadev because the first Shiv Linga was found at this place, which was later established at the central part of this temple. Chhatri is situated in the lap of the holy religious place ‘Hilmi’ which is also a confluence of two local rivulets namely Baryogi and Bilagad. The word Chhatri is synonymous with the English word umbrella, as the geography of this place resembles with umbrella. Some ancient observation says that the name Chhatri is derived from a holy tree of deodar (Himalayan cedar) located at this place, the shape of which appears like an umbrella due to its dwarf size. The elevation of Chhatri is around 5000 feet and it is about 120 KM from the district headquarters- Mandi.
The college is bestowed with 07-05-13 Bighas of land in possession and about 7 Bighas of land is expected to be transferred by different departments of the vicinity areas. The college offers undergraduate courses in Arts and Commerce Streams. Multiple committees and redressal cells are constituted for the successful running of the college.
